Throughout my career I’ve often been asked… What is the number one problem I see as a city planner? Is it funding and financing, parking, infrastructure, economy, zoning, NIMBYism and NOPEism, physical conditions, traffic, land use, safety and security, the environment?
No… it is always Leadership, Leadership, Leadership… sometimes too much leadership, but mostly the lack of leadership, clear direction and action.
- Build teams and community trust.
- Grow thick skin and a strong sense of humor.
- Listen to the silent majority, not just the negative nellies.
- Stand up to bad businesses, bad developers and civic bullies.
- Stand up for good businesses, good developers and civic leaders.
- Prioritize needs and resources, and create clear vision.
- Take command.
